Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (India/USA), theoretician and critic, teaches Comparative Literature at Columbia University (New York), where she is a founding member of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. She is mainly known for her essay Can the Subaltern Speak ? considered to be a seminal text in Postcolonial Studies. She is also invested in projects focused on education in the Bengal region. In June 2012, she was awarded the Kyoto Prize for her work.
