The American anthropologist James Scott coined the term “infrapolitics” to describe the myriad forms resistance can take.
From rumors to humor by way of the indirect attention paid to politics or defiant consumer practices, there is no lack of examples of how to get around or subvert common forms of social domination. Put to the test by mobilizing, workplace relations, and sociability, Scott claims infrapolitics makes it possible to understand all the hidden forms of unorganized resistance, whereas such resistance is very often ignored in classical political sociology research.
