Humans have long been tempted to cross over to the animal side, to take their perspective, understand what they live, see, feel, and even think. Ethologists, ethnologists, psychologists, historians, and philosophers have now incorporated this idea into their practices—a shift that obviously raises a host of epistemological and methodological questions that are probably more sensitive but not radically different from those we ask when we want to study people other than ourselves.
