In 1992, the American historian of science Robert Proctor imagined a discipline and a new word, agnotology: the study of what we don’t know, or of how scientific discussion can be manipulated for the benefit of economic and industrial interests. Some of the major companies produce knowledge that earns them a profit and destroy what might harm them. In such cases, science is used against itself to induce uncertainty, doubt, and confusion rather than to create knowledge.
