Whether it has been or is trying to be established, democracy must constantly be reinvented by the citizens who practice it—a perpetual, essential work of redefinition that nonetheless weakens it. How can democracy overcome the dangers surrounding it, not only in countries to which we would like to export it, but also where it is the rule?
