The World Health Organization defines autism as “a pervasive developmental disorder.” Recognized as a handicap, autism is characterized by difficulties interacting in the social sphere, communicating, and being aware of one’s body and its limits, but it manifests very differently from person to person. What should we do about this disorder, the causes of which are still mostly unknown? How do we begin treatment when autism’s diverse manifestations make it difficult to detect?
