Masha Gessen was born in Moscow in 1967 and lives in the United States. She has written several books on post-Soviet Russia and was subject to intimidation after the publication of her uncompromising biography of the Russian president: The Man Without a Face. The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin (Riverhead Books, 2012)
