Affirmative Action, Equality, and Social Justice
1 esplanade François Mitterrand
Lyon 2ème
Featuring: Randall Kennedy, Pierre Birnbaum
Affirmative action, unfortunately translated into French as “positive discrimination,” is the term used to describe quota policies designed to reduce social inequality. Beyond that, it is difficult to define because its application varies widely from country to country. In France, where it is one of the most divisive topics in politics, it refers to the need to discuss social justice without hiding behind the republican myth of equal opportunity. But is it really the best way to combat discrimination in democratic societies? What are the alternatives?
