Biography

Fabrice Balanche is an associate professor at the University of Lyon 2 and a member of the Group for Research and Studies on the Mediterranean and the Middle East at the Maison de l’Orient (GREMMO). With a teaching credential and a doctorate in geography, he made his first trip to the Middle East in 1990. Since then, he has spent roughly twelve years living in Syria and Lebanon, his favorite places for field research. Head of the Near Eastern Urban Observatory at the French Institute of the Near East (IFPO) between 2003 and 2007, Balanche has acted as an expert consultant on the issue of water in Syria.
