Arjun Appadurai (India/USA), sociologist and anthropologist, pursues research on modernity, globalization, and cosmopolitanism. In 1997, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a cofounder of the interdisciplinary journal Public Culture dedicated to Cultural Studies, and runs the organization “Partners for Urban Knowledge Action and Research” in Bombay. He has worked as an advisor for numerous international organizations, and currently teaches at New York University.
