Josef Winkler
WRITER
Austria
A major figure in Austrian literature, in 2008 he received the Büchner prize (the most prestigious distinction in German literature) for his complete works, which are mostly about his rural childhood, rife with stifling Catholicism and conflicts with his authoritarian, tyrannical father. His latest story, Mère et le Crayon, is devoted entirely to the mother figure. Between the pain of loss and the weight of silence, he depicts various scenes of his life, interspersed with excerpts from Peter Handke’s Malheur indifférent and Peter Weiss’s Adieu aux parents. Six years after Requiem pour un père (Verdier), Josef Winkler has delivered his "requiem for a mother".
