Denys Vinzant
COMPOSER / VISUAL ARTIST
France
Denys Vinzant was born in Grenoble on November 27, 1955. After studying at the Conservatoire National de Région in Grenoble - harmony, counterpoint, fugue, organ, history of music - then the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris - writing and analysis with Betsy Jolas, composition and research in electro-acoustical music with Guy Reibel - in 1985 he entered the collège des compositeurs permanents de Grame-Centre National de Création Musicale in Lyon, as well as the studio’s teaching team. He teaches at the Conservatoire National de Région in Saint-Etienne, where he is a profesor of composition in electro-acoustical music.
His multidimensional work revolves around precise, chiseled writing. It is somewhat like pointillism, developed from calculations done by a computer. Taking inspiriation from the world of poetry, Vinzant develops pieces that are often a mix of many forms, composed of parts that may be played by each musician in the order s/he chooses. Close to calligraphy, his scores progressively became an integral part of his work, eventually being shown in “musical” exhibitions in which they are written in gold ink on resonating glass plates. His first installations date from 1996. Currently they offer new ways of using space, new architectures, changing the places they inhabit.
