David Vann was born in 1966 on Adak Island in Alaska, where he spent part of his childhood before moving to California. His first novel, Sukkwan Island, published in France in 2010, was a huge success and was awarded the Medicis prize for foreign literature. It has been translated into fifteen languages in more than fifty countries. His second novel, Désolations, was published in France in September 2011.
Vann has also published in The Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, Outside Magazine, Men’s Journal and Writer’s Digest. His texts are appreciated in particular for their new approach to masculinity.
David Vann teaches at the University of San Francisco.
