Kevin Powers was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1980. He joined the U.S. Army when he was seventeen and fought in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. When he came back he studied literature at the University of Virginia and the University of Texas, from which he graduated with a degree in poetry. He published his first novel, Yellow Birds, in 2012. Part autobiography, the novel draws on his life as a soldier on the front in Iraq. In 2012 Yellow Birds was voted one of the ten best books of the year by the New York Times. A finalist for the National Book Award, Kevin Powers received the Guardian First Book Award, the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, and the Prix Littéraire du Monde 2013 for this novel.
