François Place was born in 1957, and studied at the Estienne school for graphic arts and industries in Paris before working as an illustrator, first for advertising, then for children’s books. In 1992 he began writing fiction and published his first album, Les derniers géants, which won numerous awards. His imaginary atlas, L’Atlas des géographes d’Orbæ, which explores twenty-six countries mapped like letters of the alphabet, appeared in three volumes between 1996 and 2000. It also received several awards, including one at the international fair in Bologna and a special Sorcières prize awarded by sellers of children’s books. Place’s latest album, La fille des batailles, received the Baobab award from the Montreuil book fair. His albums speak of the faraway, traveling, and encounters. As an illustrator he has worked with authors such as Michael Morpurgo, Erik Lhomme, and Timothée de Fombelle. He has also worked for the Louvre’s website for children. His first novel, La douane volante, was published in 2010.
