Obsession is a constant theme in Pierre Patrolin’s novels: water in La Traversée de la France à la nage (P.O.L, 2012), then fire in La Montée des cendres (P.O.L, 2013). Now, in L’Homme descend de la voiture, the narrator has just bought a car, which he describes in minute detail and which quickly becomes the central concern in his life, to the detriment of everything else. Anxiety surfaces when he finds a rifle: odd associations are then made with the car, foreboding a dramatic ending.
