Member of the Académie française and the Haut Conseil de la Francophonie, he has also been a presidential advisor. L’Exposition Coloniale (Seuil, 1988) received the Prix Goncourt. His most recent novel, Mali, ô Mali, offers the reader a one-way trip to Mali with Madame Bâ Marguerite.
