From Plutarch's Parallel Lives to Pierre Michon’s Small Lives, it is tempting to see a taste for the ordinary and the minutia of existence gaining ground in literary history. Its goal : to recreate day-to-day existence, the texture of mundane lives ; to better tell the common story of broken or successful lives, and the social forces that are at stake and shape them. Why do novelists choose to look at ordinary lives ? In what way do these lives nourish fiction and our thinking ?
