Along with love, war is the most ancient theme in literature. Through war, the writer can expose a vast range of conflicting forces. Courage, fear, fraternity, loneliness, betrayal, suffering, deception, brutality, patience, and despair thus coexist in the sealed-off world of warfare. Even heroism sometimes finds its way into it. Three young novelists – two Europeans and one American – have chosen to put their characters to the highly revealing test of the battlefield.
