Austria, the “Republic of the Alps”, was long the cultural and historical center of Europe, as European social and political events frequently remind us. Similarly, the vibrant artistic and literary scene vacillates between refinement and violence, and evidences a long creative tradition. Three writers, Josef Winkler, Robert Menasse, and Arno Geiger give us their different but complementary views of a country, a language, and a history that provide fertile ground for their writing.
