“Rooted in the tradition of Shikoku, his native island, and nourished with Western literature and philosophy, drawing on the author’s life while still remaining open to fiction, fables, and myths, Kenzaburô Ôé’s work attests to the existence of an unknown Japan: the one on the margins, the periphery, the one peopled by pariahs and rebels, clashing with the powers that be in the name of democratic political and moral values. His works form a long meditation on individual and collective catastrophes with which humanity is faced, and which are notably named Hiroshima or Fukushima: they have established Ôé as one of the most important novelists in his country, but also as one of the main consciousnesses of our age.”
