Held in partnership with Philosophie Magazine and the planétarium de Vaulx-en-Velin.

“In an unusual format, this discussion brings together the seasoned physicist, Gilles Cohen-Tannoudji, the philosopher and novelist Tristan Garcia, and Craig Bourne, a philosopher representing the Anglo-American metaphysical tradition. Must we choose between the present and eternity? This is a classical question--St. Augustine asked it long ago and it is still a burning issue in contemporary debates. On the one hand, the present doesn’t seem to exist because it immediately becomes past, which suggests we must ignore the passage of time when looking at the world. On the other hand, the future is unknowable and the past is inaccessible. We can act only in the present, which therefore seems to us to be the only thing that exists. In this debate, which has raged for a little more than a century between English and American specialists of metaphysics, partisans of eternity are called eternalists, and their adversaries, who defend the present, are called presentists.” Alexandre Lacroix

The discussion will be hosted by Alexandre Lacroix.
