From Plutarch's Parallel Lives to contemporary "biographical fiction”, real life stories fuel the writer’s imagination. But what distinguishes those narratives constructed by a writer from a biography written by a historian ? What is the role of scholarship and what is the role of projection ? For writers, to take on the life of a historical figure has less to do with a concern for historical accuracy than for its fictional power, and leads less to a retelling of heroic deeds, than to the telling of its unknown, or unsuspected, aspects, in order to prolong the internal echo that it caused.
