Cinema has proved that it can resurrect whole periods of history, given inventiveness and a large investment in stage sets. But what is the specific approach of the writer? What amount of historical research is necessary and by what means can he, or she, give us the particular feel of a bygone era ? Should a writer stick to established facts, or include the plausible as well ? What is the place of attested knowledge, and what is the place of hypothesis and imagination ?
