ensemble mise-en is an innovative and versatile New York-based contemporary music collective striving to bring challenging yet beautiful sounds to a wide range of listeners. The ensemble consists of over 15 talented musicians who are led by composer Moon Young HA. The ensemble endeavors to impart an experience simultaneously multi-cultural, intellectually stimulating, and aesthetically pleasing

(“mee” in Korean means “beauty”, and “zahn” means “to decorate”). Last year, their diverse repertoire featured unique music rarely performed in NYC, including works by Charles Ives, Kaija Saariaho, and Claude Vivier, as well as premieres by many ambitious young composers. During the upcoming year, ensemble mise-en will present four season concerts in addition to collaborating on special projects, which include ten commissions and more than twenty US and NY premieres. These
performances are supported by New York Foundation for the Arts, the Issue Project Room, Washington Square Contemporary Music Society, and Austrian Cultural Forum New York. ensemble mise-en has been performing at various exciting venues such as the Tank, the DiMenna Center, Tenri Cultural Institute, and the cell theatre, where the ensemble is a 2012-2013 artist-in-residence.

+ Elizabeth Hoffman composes for both acoustic and electroacoustic media. For her work in the latter, she has been awarded a prize and a mention respectively from the Bourges (FR) and Prix Ars Electronica (AUS) international competitions. She is also a recipient of recognition and support from the Jerome Foundation, Seattle Arts Commission Artist Awards, and Collaborative, and Humanities Grant-in-Aid awards from NYU. She has lived in New York City since 1998 when she began teaching at New York University in the Department of Music, School of Arts and Science. Her music is released on the empreintes DIGITALes, Innova, Albany, Centaur, Capstone, and World Edition labels. Hoffman's compositional focal points include timbre, tuning, and rhythmic complexity, percussion instrument design and spatialization techniques.

 

+ Moon Young HA is a composer from Seoul, South Korea, currently living and working in New York City. His music has focused on combining traditional instruments with electronics and video to affect relevant and meaningful experiences for diverse audiences. His work has been presented at festivals and concerts in Europe, Asia and the Americas by ensembles such as Alarm Will Sound, Empyrean Ensemble, LOOS Ensemble, Dark in the Song,
Ensemble s21, among others. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D in composition at Graduate School of Arts and Science, New York University, and he is director of ensemble mise-en in New York. More information can be found at his website: http://www.moonyoung.net.

 

+ Patti Kilroy is a modern-minded violinist based in New York City. Her flute-violin-cello-percussion quartet, Cadillac Moon Ensemble, has commissioned over two dozen works to date and will be releasing its first album this fall under New Dynamic Records. As a freelancer she has played with groups such as Alarm Will Sound, ETHEL, Newspeak, Signal, Argento New Music Project, W4 New Music Collective, Wordless Music Orchestra,The Circles and Lines, The Knights, and DETOUR New Music, among others. She is currently a doctoral performance student at NYU, where she enjoys

+ Violinist Sabina Torosjan has been an active performer and teacher in the Tristate area for the past few years. As a recipient of the Gluck Community Fellowship, Ms.Torosjan has done a lot of outreach work in NY, bringing music to the elderly and the disabled. She is a member of the Leora Chamber Orchestra, a recently formed ensemble of young professionals, which made its debut in Merkin Hall at the Kaufman Center in 2009. In 2010, Sabina went on a tour of China with the Manhattan Symphony. She is
also a founding member of Duo Accord with guitarist Vilian Ivantchev. Sabina Torosjan received her Bachelor's Degree from the Juilliard School where she studied with Sally Thomas and Lewis Kaplan. Sabina Torosjan began playing violin at the age of seven, in Tartu, Estonia, studying with Kai Rebane. She was a winner in regional and National Estonian competitions. Sabina moved to the United States in 2001, where she attended LaGuardia Arts, the High School of Performing Arts. She studied with Ann Setzer and Sally Thomas at the Mannes College of Music, serving as concertmaster of the Mannes preparatory division orchestra and of the NY Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra for the tribute to Nelson Riddle. During her summers, Sabina attended such festivals as Meadowmount School of Music, Green Mountain Music Festival, and Bowdoin International Music Festival.

 

+ Trevor New began his studies on the viola when he was 9 years old in Salem Oregon with Stephen Nelson. As an undergraduate in Portland, Oregon, Trevor was the Oregon Laurel Scholar and studied with Joel Belgique. Trevor completed his Masters degree as a Walgreen scholar at the University of Michigan, where he studied privately with Yizhak Schotten on viola and Dennis Wilson in jazz performance. He has participated in master classes with the Paris Piano Trio, the Tokyo String Quartet, the KLR Trio, Paul Neubauer and the Berlin Philharmonic's Philharmonia Quartet.
Trevor has extensive experience in both ensemble and solo work. He was a finalist in the University of Michigan concerto competition and has taken part in numerous classical, jazz, and new music ensembles; this includes both arranging and performing. In October of 2011, Trevor, with the Chelsea Symphony of New York, performed the Elgar Cello Concerto transcribed for viola. In May he played with Feist in a sold out show at Radio City Music Hall and was fortunate enough to record a solo track on Joseph Daley's Portraits and Virtues Album, which will be released later this year.

 

+ Alexandra Jones is a freelance cellist in the New York area. She holds a Bachelor of Music from New York University. Ali enjoys her work performing, recording, and teaching. In addition to ensemble mise-en, some of her colleagues and ensembles include the Ureuk Symphony, the Chelsea Symphony, the Metro Chamber Orchestra, Mercer St. Trio, Steinhardt’s Film Scoring department, e Relatives, Dig North Music, and Mason Jar Music.
Ali began playing cello through a local community program in her hometown of Brainerd, Minnesota. Her primary teachers include Marion Feldman, Eric Jacobsen, Guillaume Pirard, Joshua Koestenbaum, and Grant Wilcox. Her teaching philosophies are rooted in the community program from which she first learned cello and, subsequently, began teaching it. She has been teaching for eight years.
