JOURNALIST / WRITER

Italia

Committed to the extreme left of the political checkerboard, Erri De Luca was a laborer who became a writer, poet, and translator late in his career. A generous, deeply sincere and spiritual voice of Italian literature, he draws emotions and food for thought from sacred texts. Le Tort du soldat juxtaposes two stories: that of the narrator, who is working on a translation from Yiddish; and the one an old war criminal is telling his daughter at the next table. A short, striking text that leads readers to think about the complex memory of the 20th century’s great tragedies.
