As readers, we frequent a number of characters, each a particular identity with which our imagination plays. Our feelings vacillate between affinity, lack of understanding, and even repulsion. In the thick of writing, the novelist’s art consists of giving a body and voice to these paper beings, whether they are drawn from reality or are purely fictional creations. What processes does the novelist use to make his or her characters speak? How is the novelist's own voice heard?
